Call Sen. Nelson: Don't back down

Dear MoveOn members,

Let's recap: The Democrats sent a bill with a timeline to end the war to President Bush. President Bush vetoed it. Now, the Democrats have to figure out what to do next.

Most Democrats seem to be holding strong. But they're under a lot of pressure to compromise and we're beginning to see reports in the papers that a few Democrats are pushing to drop the timeline to bring our troops home—replacing it with benchmarks, which wouldn't do much to end the occupation in Iraq.1

It's moments like these when calls from constituents really matter. Can you call Sen. Nelson and tell him to stand firm against President Bush and demand concrete action to end the war—not just symbolic benchmarks?

Here's where to call:

Senator Bill Nelson

Democrats need to keep up the fight against President Bush on Iraq right now. They have the people behind them—more than 60 percent of the country backs their proposals to bring our troops home.2 Even congressional Republicans are starting to abandon the president on the war. On Sunday, John Boehner, the minority leader in the House said that Republican support for the president would not last.3

While setting benchmarks to measure the Iraqi government's progress is a good step, it isn't enough to end the war. There must be consequences if the benchmarks aren't met and Congress must begin bringing our troops home from the mess in Iraq.

The voters elected Democrats to power to end the war. Now is the time for congressional Democrats to stand up and fight the president for real accountability on the war.

The next few days are critical. Please call Sen. Nelson and tell him that you're counting on Congress to stand up to President Bush and end this war.

Thanks for all you do,
